Title: Loggerhead Lagoon

Medium: Watercolor

2nd Place in the Blue Koi Gallery Earth and Elements Art Competition.

Loggerhead Lagoon was inspired by the luminous waters of the Florida Keys and the quiet beauty found beneath the ocean’s surface. The painting features a loggerhead sea turtle emerging from the left side of the composition, gliding through vibrant blue water while making direct eye contact with the viewer. Sun rays filter down from above, creating depth, movement, and a calm underwater atmosphere. Iridescent blue bubbles shimmer along the bottom of the piece, adding texture and reflecting the way light dances beneath the sea.
About the Work
I wanted this painting to capture the feeling of a genuine wildlife encounter, where time seems to slow and connection replaces distance. The turtle’s gaze transforms it from simply a subject into an individual presence within its habitat.
Inspired by the marine ecosystems of the Florida Keys, the piece evokes both the beauty and fragility of ocean life. Loggerhead Lagoon serves as both a celebration of the ocean and a reminder of the importance of protecting the habitats that sea turtles and countless other marine species depend upon.
Curator Note
Lauren Connolly’s image stands out for its confident color palette and expressive presentation. The contrast between the pink cockatoo and vivid green background creates a visually engaging composition with strong personality and contemporary appeal.
