A Walk in the Woods
Curator's Note
Selected as the 2nd Place Winner of the Open Theme Art Competition, Winona Vold presents two deeply personal works that reflect love in its many forms. In A Walk in the Woods, she preserves a tender memory of commitment and shared presence, while Deathbed turns toward grief, farewell, and the quiet beauty found in a difficult moment. Together, these acrylic paintings on round wood panels reveal Vold’s ability to transform intimate memories into thoughtful, emotionally resonant works. Her paintings remind us that love can be light, heavy, fleeting, and enduring all at once.
Love, Memory, and the Weight of a Moment
On the left side of the circular panel, a man in a black hoodie, black baseball hat, and blue jeans, facing away from the viewer, is holding the white string for a metallic blue, star shaped helium balloon in his right hand.
The balloon is floating in the upper right quarter of the circle, the white string slacking in between the balloon and man’s hand, because it is low on helium. He is in the woods in autumn, the forest floor packed with low growing green and yellowing plants. The right edge is framed by a tree trunk. Tiny flashes of pale gray sky show through the orange and yellow leaves. A moss covered log is visible through plant leaves along the bottom of the panel.
Vold’s paintings remind us that love can be both weightless and deeply enduring, held in small moments, remembered places, and the quiet beauty of what remains.
